Orcrist — The Goblin-Cleaver of Gondolin
Thorin Oakenshield's Sword Pendant in Sterling Silver
"It was an elvish blade, and there were runes on the blade, silver and gold."
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
The Sword of a Lost City — Worn by the King of a Reclaimed One

Gondolin was the most beautiful and most secret city of the First Age — built by King Turgon in a hidden valley, its location unknown to Morgoth for nearly four hundred years. When Gondolin finally fell, it fell from within, betrayed by Maeglin who told Morgoth its location in exchange for Idril Celebrindal. The city burned. Its smiths were gone. But the blades they had made survived — ancient weapons of exceptional quality, buried in a troll's hoard in the Third Age until a wizard's sharp eyes identified them for what they were.

Orcrist — the Goblin-cleaver, called Biter by the Goblins of the Misty Mountains — was one of those blades. In Sindarin Elvish, Orcrist means "Orc-cleave" (orc + rist, from cirith, to cleave). It was the companion blade of Glamdring, Gandalf's sword, and both were made by the same Gondolin smiths. When Gandalf found them in the troll-hoard, he gave Glamdring to himself and Orcrist to Thorin. A Gondolin blade in the hands of the rightful King of Erebor — two ancient claims to greatness, reconnecting across three thousand years.

This is the official 60mm sterling silver pendant of that sword — the largest sword pendant in the official New Zealand range. Made under licence from New Line Productions by the official licence holders. Includes Hobbit leather pouch, translation card, and licence card.

What Does "Orcrist" Mean? — The Goblin-Cleaver of Gondolin

Orcrist is a Sindarin Elvish word meaning "Orc-cleave" — from orc (goblin, orc) and rist (a cleaving, from the verb rista, to cleave). The Goblins of the Misty Mountains, who feared it, called it simply Biter. Its companion blade Glamdring they called Beater. The runes running along the blade have been translated as NAGOL E-LŶG — "Tooth of Snake" or "Tooth of Dragon" — a reminder that even the names of Gondolin's weapons carried multiple layers of meaning, each one more dangerous than the last.

Orcrist's Journey — Troll-Hoard to Thorin's Tomb

The three trolls — Bert, Tom, and William — had accumulated an unlikely collection of valuables in their lair in the Trollshaws. When Gandalf and the Dwarves investigated after turning the trolls to stone at sunrise, Gandalf found the blades almost immediately — recognising their quality and their origin from the runes alone, before Elrond confirmed their names at Rivendell. Gandalf kept Glamdring; Bilbo was given Sting; Thorin was given Orcrist.

Orcrist served Thorin through the Misty Mountains, through the goblin tunnels (where the Goblins recognised it and howled in rage at the sight of it), and through Mirkwood. It was confiscated by Thranduil when Thorin was captured in the Woodland Realm — kept, somewhat respectfully, by the Elvenking. After the Battle of Five Armies, Thranduil placed Orcrist on Thorin's tomb in Erebor, where it would glow as a warning if enemies ever approached the mountain.

Richard Armitage, who played Thorin in Peter Jackson's films, kept the Orcrist prop after filming ended — a telling detail about how much the weapon came to mean during production. A sword that survived from the First Age to the Battle of Five Armies, and then survived again in the hands of the actor who carried it.

The Elvish Blade Tradition — Why Gondolin Swords Glow

In Tolkien's text, the great elvish blades of the Elder Days were made with a specific quality: they detected the presence of Orcs and Goblins and warned their bearers by glowing. Glamdring and Sting both exhibited this property, lighting blue in the dark when enemies were close. Orcrist shared this quality. The blades were not simply weapons — they were instruments of warning, carrying the accumulated enmity of Gondolin's Elves for the servants of Morgoth across millennia. The glow was not magic applied from outside; it was the nature of the metal itself, forged by craftspeople who poured their own will and knowledge of the enemy into the work.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Orcrist Sword Pendant
What does Orcrist mean?

Orcrist is a Sindarin Elvish word meaning "Orc-cleave" — from orc (goblin, orc) and rist (a cleaving, from the verb rista, to cleave). The Goblins of the Misty Mountains called it Biter. Its companion blade Glamdring they called Beater. The runes running along the blade translate as NAGOL E-LŶG — "Tooth of Snake" or "Tooth of Dragon" in Sindarin.

Where was Orcrist made?

Orcrist was forged by the Elven-smiths of Gondolin — the hidden city of the First Age, built by King Turgon in a secret valley. It was the companion blade of Glamdring and dates to the First Age of Middle-earth, over three thousand years before the events of The Hobbit. It was discovered in a troll-hoard in the Trollshaws, where Gandalf identified it by its runes and gave it to Thorin Oakenshield.

Did Orcrist actually glow blue in the films?

In Tolkien's text, Orcrist and other Gondolin blades glowed blue in the presence of Orcs and Goblins — this was a property of all great Elvish swords. In Peter Jackson's films, Orcrist does not explicitly glow in most scenes, though the elvish sword tradition of glowing as warning is described for Sting. The blue glow property is firmly established in Tolkien's source material.

What happened to Orcrist after Thorin died?

After the Battle of Five Armies, Thranduil placed Orcrist on Thorin's tomb in Erebor. In Tolkien's text it was said to glow as a warning if enemies ever approached the mountain. Richard Armitage, who played Thorin in Peter Jackson's films, kept the Orcrist prop after filming ended.

Is this officially licensed?

Yes — official New Line Productions licensed product, made in New Zealand. Hobbit leather pouch, translation card and licence card included.

What size is the pendant?

60mm (2.36 inches) in length — the largest sword pendant in the official New Zealand range. A 45cm sterling silver chain is included as standard; other lengths are available as options.
