Gimli's Axe — The Fellowship's Dwarf-Warrior Pendant
Sterling Silver — The Weapon of Moria and Helm's Deep
"Certainty of death. Small chance of success.
What are we waiting for?"
— Gimli, son of Glóin, The Return of the King
Gimli Son of Glóin — The Dwarf Who Redefined the Fellowship

The Fellowship of the Ring was designed as a coalition: Elves, Men, Dwarves, Hobbits, and a Wizard. In practice, Gimli was the only Dwarf — the sole representative of Durin's folk in the most consequential company assembled since the Council of the White Council. He carried that weight entirely on his own, and he carried it well, with an axe in his hand and a running kill-count he was updating throughout the Battle of Helm's Deep.

This 48mm pendant is the Gimli's Axe — the Fellowship-era tribute to the character himself, the compact, daily-wearing version for those who carry Gimli's spirit with them rather than displaying the full weapon's history. Solid 925 sterling silver. Made under licence from New Line Cinema by the official New Zealand licence holders. Arrives with a leather pouch and certificate of authenticity.

The Moria Axe — Found in the Rubble of Balin's Tomb

When the Fellowship passed through Moria, they discovered the tomb of Balin — Gimli's relative and the leader of the ill-fated Dwarven colony that had tried to reclaim Khazad-dûm after it was lost. The tomb and the Chamber of Mazarbul around it told the story of the colony's end: the last survivors, surrounded, overwhelmed. It was in the rubble of that chamber that Gimli claimed a double-bladed battle-axe — the weapon that would serve him through every battle that followed. The axe found in the ruins of Dwarven ambition, carried forward into the war that determined the fate of Middle-earth.

Gimli's Story — Courage, Friendship, and Unprecedented History

Gimli began the Fellowship with every reason to be suspicious of his companions. Elrond was the same Elrond who had once spoken against the Dwarves at the Council. Legolas was the son of the Elvenking Thranduil, who had imprisoned Gimli's father Glóin decades earlier. The grudges between Elves and Dwarves had built up over thousands of years. Gimli carried all of them into the Fellowship — and then set them down.

His friendship with Legolas is the most remarkable relationship in The Lord of the Rings precisely because of its improbability. By the end of the War of the Ring, they had fought together in every major engagement, kept a running tally of kills at Helm's Deep that became one of the story's lighter moments in an otherwise very dark hour, and developed a mutual regard that the traditions of both their peoples said should have been impossible. Gimli eventually became so close to Galadriel that he asked for a strand of her hair as his greatest treasure — and she gave him three. The first Dwarf in history to receive such a gift from an Elf of Lothlórien.

After the War of the Ring, Gimli became the Lord of the Glittering Caves of Aglarond and later — uniquely in all of recorded history — sailed to the Undying Lands as Legolas's companion. No Dwarf had ever done so. It is not entirely clear by what authority or exception he was permitted to go. Tolkien's notes suggest Galadriel's influence may have been involved. The axe he carried through all of it is what this pendant represents.

Gimli's Axe vs Glóin's Axe — Which Pendant?

Two official axe pendants are in the collection. The 48mm Gimli's Axe is this piece — the compact, character-specific tribute designed for daily wearing as a Fellowship piece. The 60mm Glóin's Axe is the larger statement version emphasising the weapon's full inheritance history across both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Both are solid sterling silver. If the story of the axe connecting two quests matters most, choose the 60mm. If carrying Gimli's Fellowship spirit is what you're after, this is the one.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Gimli's Axe Pendant
What axe does Gimli use in Lord of the Rings?

Gimli uses a double-bladed battle-axe in The Lord of the Rings — one he claimed from the rubble of Balin's tomb in the Chamber of Mazarbul when the Fellowship passed through Moria. The discovery of the tomb told the story of Balin's failed Dwarven colony in Khazad-dûm. Gimli carried the axe found there through every battle that followed: Helm's Deep, the Pelennor Fields, and the Black Gate. He also inherited the tradition of axe-wielding from his father Glóin.

Who is Gimli in Lord of the Rings?

Gimli son of Glóin is the Dwarf member of the Fellowship of the Ring — one of the nine companions chosen to accompany Frodo Baggins on the quest to destroy the One Ring. He is known for his fierce loyalty, courage, and skill with the axe. He also developed an unlikely friendship with Legolas the Elf that became one of the War of the Ring's most enduring relationships. After the war, he became Lord of the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and eventually became the only Dwarf in history to sail to the Undying Lands.

What is the difference between Gimli's Axe (48mm) and Glóin's Axe (60mm)?

The 48mm Gimli's Axe is the compact, everyday-wear piece — a Fellowship character tribute focused on Gimli specifically. The 60mm Glóin's Axe is the larger statement piece emphasising the weapon's full inheritance history connecting The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Both are solid sterling silver.

Is this officially licensed?

Yes — official New Line Cinema licensed product, made in New Zealand by the official licence holders. Leather pouch and certificate of authenticity included.

Did Gimli really sail to the Undying Lands?

Yes — Gimli is the only Dwarf in Tolkien's mythology known to have sailed to the Undying Lands (Valinor), accompanying Legolas after the War of the Ring. Tolkien's notes suggest this was an exceptional permission, possibly involving Galadriel's intercession. No other Dwarf ever received this honour.
