In all the heroic traditions of Middle-earth — the great swords of kings, the legendary weapons of Elvish warriors, the axes of dwarf-lords — none tells a stranger or more enduring story than a small blade found in a filthy troll-hoard by a very bewildered hobbit from the Shire who had never held a weapon in his life.
Sting was forged in Gondolin during the First Age — a blade of the Elvish city that stood until it fell, whose weapons were scattered through the long ages of the world until most were lost forever. When Bilbo Baggins stumbled across it in the hoard of the trolls Bert, Tom, and William, he had no idea what he had found. He named it himself, after using it for the first time against the Great Spiders of Mirkwood — and in naming it, made it his own.

Gondolin was the last and greatest of the hidden Elven cities of the First Age — a city of towers and fountains built in secret in a mountain-ringed valley, protected by enchantments that kept it hidden for nearly four hundred years. Its weapons were the finest made in Middle-earth at the height of Elvish craft. When Morgoth finally destroyed Gondolin in the First Age, the survivors fled, and much of what they carried was lost in the chaos of centuries.
Sting was one of those scattered blades. By the Third Age it had found its way into the hoard of three particularly unpleasant trolls in the Trollshaws east of Rivendell — until thirteen dwarves, a wizard, and a very reluctant hobbit came looking for the trolls' gold. Gandalf identified the blades immediately. He took Glamdring. Thorin took Orcrist. And Bilbo, holding a blade that was merely a dagger to an elf but a very reasonable sword for a hobbit, kept Sting.
The blade had one other quality that made it uniquely suited to its new owner: it glowed with a cold blue light whenever Orcs or Goblins were near.
