A Symbol of Hope from the Last Homely House
though in it was written the memory of many things both glad and sorrowful."
Elrond Half-elven is the oldest active character in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films — born in the First Age to Eärendil the Mariner and Elwing the White, he has lived through the entirety of the Wars of Beleriand, the downfall of Númenor, the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, the loss of Gil-galad, the rise and apparent fall of Sauron, and the long centuries of the Third Age that followed. He has been present at almost every critical juncture in Middle-earth's history.
The pendant he wears is the Star of Eärendil — the Silmaril that his father carried into the heavens after the War of Wrath, where it became the morning and evening star visible from Middle-earth. To Elrond, it is not merely a symbol of hope. It is his father. The pendant represents the most ancient and personal connection in the film's narrative — the light that has been in the sky of Middle-earth since before the sun rose over the First Age, carried there by Eärendil, watched from Rivendell by his son for six thousand years. Officially licensed. Made in New Zealand — where Rivendell was filmed. 33mm × 24mm. Solid 925 sterling silver.
Rivendell — the "Last Homely House East of the Sea" — was filmed at Kaitoke Regional Park, approximately 50 kilometres north of Wellington on State Highway 2, in New Zealand's Hutt Valley. Peter Jackson chose this location for its ancient lowland temperate rainforest of rimu, rātā, beech, and hīnau — interlocking trees, crystalline rivers, and the quality of filtered light through native forest canopy that gave Rivendell its particular ethereal quality on screen. The park is now home to an official Rivendell trail with interpretive signage showing exactly where key scenes were filmed. This pendant is made in the same country, by the official licence holders — a direct geographic connection to the place where Elrond's hall came to life.
Elrond is the son of Eärendil the Mariner and Elwing the White — two of the most significant figures in Tolkien's First Age mythology. His parents were themselves the children of mortals and Elves, making Elrond Half-elven by descent. When the Valar offered him and his twin brother Elros the choice between mortality and immortality, Elrond chose to be counted among the Eldar. Elros chose mortal life and became the first King of Númenor. The brothers' choices shaped the history of Middle-earth for the next several thousand years.
Elrond was present at the siege of Eregion, the fall of Númenor (through its spiritual aftershocks), and stood in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men at the siege of Barad-dûr where Sauron was defeated and Gil-galad was slain. He was there when Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's hand. He was there when Isildur refused to destroy it. He spent the following three thousand years waiting — healing the wounded, preserving the knowledge of the Elder Days, raising Aragorn in his household as the heir of Isildur, and doing what he could against the slow return of the darkness he had seen before.
The pendant he wears carries all of this. The Star of Eärendil was the light that shone when hope seemed gone in the First Age. At Rivendell, looking at his father's star from the falls of Imladris across thousands of years of history, it was the same light. The same hope. That is what this pendant represents, worn 33mm at a time on the chest of whoever carries it next.
Eärendil the Mariner was Elrond's father — a Half-elven hero of the First Age who sailed to Valinor to beg the Valar for aid against Morgoth. The Valar granted his prayer, and as reward for his deed, set Eärendil in the sky bearing one of the three Silmarils — the greatest jewels ever made — as the brightest star in Middle-earth's sky. The star of Eärendil is the first thing Galadriel captures in the Phial she gives to Frodo. It is the light Frodo calls on in the lair of Shelob when every other light has gone out. In Tolkien's world, no symbol of hope appears more consistently across more of the story's darkest moments than the light Eärendil carries in the heavens. The Elrond Pendant carries that light in 33mm of polished sterling silver.
