The Royal Seal of the King Under the Mountain
it would be a merrier world."
Thorin Oakenshield was not simply a dwarf warrior. He was the last legitimate King of Durin's Folk — the direct heir of a dynasty that stretched back to the founding of the great halls of Khazad-dûm, the inheritor of a claim to Erebor that 171 years of exile under Smaug had not extinguished. His royal seal was the visible mark of that authority: the emblem that identified him to other dwarves, that declared his bloodline, that said in a single symbol what his full title required a sentence to express.
This pendant takes the form of a substantial ring — Thorin's own kind of object — hung from a chain, bearing his distinct royal seal deeply engraved into the silver and oxidised black. The oxidised contrast creates the rugged, dark-and-bright dwarven aesthetic: not the smooth elegance of Elvish craft, but the proud, angular mark of a people who built their kingdoms in stone and lit them with forge-fire. The ring pendant is the King's signet reimagined as jewellery for daily wearing.
Officially licensed. Made in New Zealand. 30mm × 18mm, solid 925 sterling silver, 45cm chain included. Arrives in a presentation gift box with a storage pouch and Licence of Authenticity.
The Thorin royal seal is laser-engraved deep into the silver and then oxidised black — a patination process that darkens the recessed engraving while the raised surfaces remain bright. The result is a high-contrast, rugged finish that captures exactly the dwarven aesthetic from the films: bold, angular, built to last, not decorative but declarative. The mark of a king who fought for his birthright and wore his lineage as armour.
Thorin II Oakenshield was the son of Thráin II and the grandson of Thrór, the last King under the Mountain before Smaug came. He was born in Erebor, knew it in its glory, and was driven from it as a young dwarf. He spent the next 150 years as a wandering craftsman and warrior in the Blue Mountains — forging weapons, working in the mines of Men for payment, never quite accepting the exile that other dwarves had learned to live with.
The name Oakenshield came from the Battle of Azanulbizar, when Thorin's shield was broken and he used the branch of an oak tree as both shield and club to fight his way out. A name earned in battle. A name that said everything about what he was — resourceful, stubborn, willing to fight with whatever was to hand, impossible to stop completely.
Thorin's most famous quote — that a merrier world would value food and cheer and song above hoarded gold — was spoken near his own death, when the dragon-sickness had passed and he could see clearly for the first time in months what it had done to him. It is one of Tolkien's most precise character moments: the most gold-proud dwarf in the story, saying at the last that gold was never what mattered. The ring pendant carries both truths at once — the royal seal of a king, and the final wisdom of the dwarf who wore it.
The pendant takes the form of a ring — Thorin's own form of jewellery. Where Elvish pendants are leaf-shaped or star-shaped, this is a ring: the fundamental dwarven object, the thing Durin's folk crafted with their greatest skill, the form that holds the most concentrated expression of their craft. The royal seal engraved on the pendant's ring face is the mark of Thorin's authority in the form that authority always took in dwarven culture — stamped in metal, carried permanently, worn as evidence of who you are.
| 30mm × 18mm — Substantial Pendant ScaleAt 30mm long by 18mm wide, the ring pendant is a clear, present piece at the collarbone — large enough for the engraved royal seal to be fully legible, compact enough for daily wearing. The ring form hangs naturally on the chain, the seal facing outward. | Laser-Engraved, Oxidised Black ContrastThe royal seal is laser-engraved deep into the silver — not surface-etched, but properly cut into the metal — then oxidised to darken the recessed lines while the raised surfaces remain bright sterling silver. The dark-and-bright contrast is the visual signature of the piece. |

FAQ
What is Thorin's royal seal?
Thorin's royal seal is the heraldic emblem of the King under the Mountain — the mark of the line of Durin, engraved into the pendant and oxidised black for a striking dark-and-bright contrast. It represents Thorin's birthright as heir to Erebor and the dwarven royal dynasty that stretched back to Durin the Deathless, the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves.
What is the difference between this pendant and the Thorin ring?
Both pieces bear Thorin's royal emblem. The Ring Pendant hangs on a 45cm chain at the collarbone — worn as a necklace. The Thorin Ring is made to your exact size and worn on the finger. The pendant is the choice for those who prefer necklace jewellery; the ring is for those who want the king's mark on the hand, where rings carry meaning most directly.
Why is the engraving oxidised black?
The oxidisation process darkens the recessed engraved lines while the raised surfaces remain at bright sterling silver. The high-contrast result captures the angular, bold aesthetic of dwarven craft from the films — declarative rather than decorative, the mark of a people who built in stone and expressed identity through precise metalwork.
What comes in the box?
The pendant arrives in a presentation gift box with a storage pouch, 45cm sterling silver chain, and Licence of Authenticity card. Gift-ready from the moment it arrives.
Is this officially licensed?
Yes — official New Line Productions licensed product, made in New Zealand.
