Thorin II Oakenshield was the son of Thráin II and the grandson of Thrór, the last King under the Mountain. He spent 150 years in exile after Smaug drove the Dwarves from Erebor in 2770 of the Third Age — working as a craftsman and warrior in the Blue Mountains, never entirely accepting the loss, never releasing the claim.
The name Oakenshield was earned at the Battle of Azanulbizar, when his own shield was broken and he fought the remainder of the battle with an oak branch in his left hand and his weapon in his right. He survived that battle. Thráin disappeared soon after — captured by Sauron's servants and taken to Dol Guldur, where Gandalf found him dying sixty years later. The quest to reclaim Erebor was Thorin's inheritance from a father he never got back.
What makes Thorin one of Tolkien's most fully realised characters is the contradiction at the centre of him. He was genuinely noble — brave, fiercely loyal to his people, capable of wisdom and generosity. He was also capable of the dragon-sickness: the gold-madness that took him when the treasure was finally within reach and made him briefly the kind of king he would have despised in another. His famous final words — valuing food, cheer, and song above hoarded gold — were his own correction, spoken at the last moment he could give it. The ring carries both: the authority of the king, and the humility of what he understood at the end.
