Official Sterling Silver — The King Who Died Standing
"Helm Hammerhand still stands!"
— The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024)
A New Chapter in Middle-earth — The First Ring of Its Kind

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim — released theatrically in December 2024 — brought to the screen the story of Helm Hammerhand, the ninth King of Rohan, whose legend had existed only in Tolkien's Appendices for over seventy years. This ring is the first and only official jewellery piece connected to the new film — an exclusively licensed tribute to the character who gave Helm's Deep its name, voiced in the anime by Brian Cox.

Custom-crafted in solid 925 sterling silver in New Zealand — the home of Middle-earth's cinematic legacy — with intricate motifs reflecting the martial prowess and cultural identity of the Rohirrim. A regal emblem of Rohan's most legendary warrior-king. Available in UK/NZ/AU and US sizing. Arrives in a branded Lord of the Rings presentation pouch with a 5-Year Written Guarantee.

Why Is Helm's Deep Named After Helm Hammerhand?

Helm's Deep takes its name from Helm Hammerhand, the ninth King of Rohan, who made his final stand in the ancient fortress of the Hornburg during the Long Winter of TA 2758–2759. Besieged by a combined force of Dunlendings, Corsairs of Umbar, and Easterlings led by Wulf, Helm withdrew into the Hornburg with his people and held it throughout months of bitter cold and famine. During the siege, Helm made solo night raids into the Dunlending lines, fighting barehanded — his superstition was that if he used no weapon, no weapon could bite him. The Dunlendings came to believe he was an invincible wraith. After Helm died frozen in the snow — standing upright, eyes open — the fortress was renamed in his honour. That fortress became Helm's Deep, where the first great battle of the War of the Ring was fought two centuries later.

Who Was Helm Hammerhand — The Legend Behind the Name

Helm Hammerhand was born in the year 2691 of the Third Age and became the ninth King of Rohan in TA 2741, amid ongoing conflict with the Dunlendings — a people who had been pushed from their ancestral lands by the Rohirrim and never stopped fighting to recover them. Helm inherited the war along with the crown. He is described in Tolkien's Appendices as a man of exceptional physical strength — intimidating, wrathful, and more comfortable on the battlefield than the throne.

The name Hammerhand came from a specific incident in TA 2754. Freca, a wealthy Dunlending-blooded lord of Rohan, came to a council at Edoras with armed retainers to force Helm's agreement to a marriage between Freca's son Wulf and Helm's daughter. During the quarrel that followed, Helm struck Freca once with his bare fist. The blow was so great that Freca died from it soon after. "I only struck him the once" — and that was enough. The name Hammerhand was earned in that instant.

What followed was four years of escalating conflict. Wulf allied with the Corsairs of Umbar and Easterlings and overran Rohan. Helm withdrew to the Hornburg. During the five-month siege that became the Long Winter, with his sons dead and his people starving, Helm made nightly solo raids into the enemy lines — barehanded, in snow and frost, growing gaunt but somehow growing more fearsome as the winter deepened. The Dunlendings began to believe he was no longer human. When his body was found frozen in the snow — standing upright, eyes open, as if still defying them — it only confirmed the belief. The wraith of Helm Hammerhand, the Dunlendings said, still wandered the Hornburg. The fortress kept his name forever.

The War of the Rohirrim — The 2024 Anime Film

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an animated feature film released in December 2024, produced by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation with WingNut Films as executive producer. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and co-written and produced by Philippa Boyens — Tolkien expert and co-writer of all six Peter Jackson Middle-earth films — it is the first Middle-earth animated theatrical feature and the first new canonical LOTR content since The Hobbit trilogy in 2014.

The film is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings — before Helm's Deep existed as a name, before the War of the Ring, in a Rohan that was still defining its culture and its borders. The story is narrated by Éowyn and centres on Héra, Helm's daughter. Brian Cox voices Helm. Miranda Otto returns as Éowyn as narrator. The film is entirely canonical to the Peter Jackson cinematic universe, with Peter Jackson himself serving as executive producer. This ring is the official jewellery tribute to the film and the king at its centre.

Besieged by Dunlendings, Corsairs, and Easterlings under Wulf, Helm held the fortress for months, making solo night raids barehanded. When his frozen body was found standing upright in the snow — eyes open, still defiant — the Dunlendings believed his wraith still haunted the fortress. Who is Helm Hammerhand?

Helm Hammerhand was the ninth King of Rohan, who ruled from TA 2741 until his death in TA 2759. He was called Hammerhand because of his extraordinary strength and the superstition that if he used no weapon, no weapon could bite him — he was known to fight enemies barehanded. He killed the Dunlending lord Freca with a single bare-handed blow during a council dispute, triggering a war. During the Long Winter siege of the Hornburg that followed, he made nightly solo raids against his enemies until he died frozen in the snow, standing upright. Brian Cox voices him in The War of the Rohirrim (2024).
